Wednesday, July 18, 2007 || Newport Beach: Coming soon to MTV
MTV's new Newport Beach reality drama filmed the lives of teens attending Newport Harbor High School early this summer when MTV decided to move the popular Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County series a few miles up the Orange County coast to Newport Beach where they created a similar show on the lives of Newport teens. I had assumed that they would cast early this year and wait until the start of the school year, or much later on this year to begin filming the new show just like they did in the past with Laguna, but it seems like they fast tracked the whole process and decided to begin filming immediately after casting concluded and the cast was chosen. Several reports coming out of Newport tell me that the show filmed over a three month period, unlike most seasons of Laguna Beach which filmed for 6 months.
In June, the Harbor High graduation and prom were filmed. They could have continued filming into July to get a bit more footage, but I believe they wanted to end it after school finished to get in those final goodbyes for the finale episode and get the show on the air in time. The decision to begin filming during the latter part of this school year instead of filming later this year for more months was most likely made to give the many fans of Laguna Beach something to watch late this summer when the new season of Laguna Beach usually airs. If they waited to film the show later, fans would go wild wondering where their fourth season of Laguna Beach is and the newly casted Newport teens will move on in school. . Speaking of Laguna Beach, that former show will likely be closely tied to this new Newport show in many ways. They might air a special or say something about the big move to Newport to explain to fans why there is no fourth season of Laguna, and The Real Orange County tag line used for Laguna Beach will also probably be added to the show's title. It would make sense to promote the show as being tied to Laguna Beach in some way and market it to the viewers as still being The Real Orange County, just in a different beach town. Other than that, the show will be filmed and shown in the same style as Laguna Beach, and of course you'll see the same high school drama (love triangles, cat fights, parties, etc.)
The idea for Newport is that they film for three months and end around the time they have prom, graduation, and school gets out for the summer. The footage they got out of those three months will be edited into episodes for the first season of the show which will likely air in August or later this year. If the show is successful in it's first season and is embraced by viewers and fans of Laguna Beach, MTV executives and producers will likely decide to greenlight a second season that would film for more months and include more episodes than the first season.
i'm actually pretty psyched. i hated the 3rd cast of Laguna Beach, they were all hyper aware of the cameras and such brats (except raquel)! Maybe Newport will bring a fresh perspective. i hope so ...
from the article, it sounds like filming has already finished, they stopped when school let out for the summer but maybe they're going for extra footage or something??
As a a former Newport resident, I'm personally sick of all this ''Real O.C.'' crap. I think they need to do a show in the ghetto or something, and change up the scenery. How about Compton: The Real L.A. County? MTV should just scrap this thing completely. ''The O.C.'' was cool for like, three minutes.

^^Wow I just made myself look like a dork. I had put laguna and then changed it to newport- I lived in both cities- but I thought my comment wasn't published so I changed the city to newport make a better point.
i'm excited they're giving it a try. LB season 3 sucked so it was either scrap it altogether or revamp it. I'm glad they chose the latter now let's just hope they cast it well!

I live in Newport and I've never even seen the cameras but I have seen the MTV vans. I think they'll start to film in September once school starts.

I'm kinda over it. The first and second season of LB came together so well now it seems like they're trying too hard.
once a laguna fan, always a laguna fan.

i really liked the third season, people are right, it wouldn't be the same.
