But that's not how it went down, the Heroes star explained to Seventeen: "I just knew I wanted to breathe. I wanted to be single at the time."
The self-assured teen went on to say, "It just hit me like a ton of bricks: This is the time I need to be with myself. It takes such a secure person to be with someone like me—it takes so much confidence; it takes so much trust."
Only, as much as Hay-Hay says she needed her space and wanted to be single, rumors quickly surfaced that the starlet was dating Heroes costar Milo Ventimiglia—a coupling that went public once she turned the ripe old age of 18.
Like we said, funny how these things work out.

who knows what the truth is but stephen always stuck me as being too obsessive back in the lb kristin days. Then again Hayden did dump him for Milo so maybe what comes around goes around... ;)
Hayden and Stephen were still dating when she turned 18. Then the pictures of her and Milo getting cozy during the Heroes tour surfaced. People began to suspect that Hayden and Stephen were on the outs. When she returned stateside, she celebrated her 18th birthday. It was at her party where she and Stephen got into an argument. shortly after, they announced their break-up and she started dating Milo. That all happened within a two week period so I don't buy she needed "to breathe" argument. She was just waiting to turn 18 so she could date Milo. Pretty classless if you ask me.
That trip to Europe publicizing Heroes changed everything for Hayden Panettiere and her costar Milo Ventimiglia. It must have been MIGHTY romantic and we just learned the details about what happened when they came back. (Check out that body language, above.) Hayden and her boyfriend Stephen Colletti (One Tree Hill) went to Les Deux to celebrate her return and things went immediately bad. He must have been suspicious about Milo because he started SCREAMING at Hayden in the club. A witness said the veins in his neck were sticking out. After he finished his tirade he stormed out (for GOOD), but Hayden remained calm. Minutes later Milo strolled in and sat down with Hayden. They partied as if nothing happened and left holding hands. Milo and Hayden are making a feeble attempt to keep the romance under wraps, but we all saw them sitting side by side at the Emmys, didn't we?

I don't think they were quilting in her apartment. The following week after Hayden and Milo were caught by paps coming from her apartment, Hayden and Stephen officially broke-up. Follow the timeline and tell me the two weren't hooking up before she turned 18. Gross if you ask me. I don't doubt for a second that Milo has been coveting and lusting after Hayden for a while. Hayden was probably more than happy to reciprocate affections from an older man. She probably saw Milo as an upgrade. I guess she "grew" out of Stephen quickly.
1:19, Stephen was probably fed-up with her famewhoring cheating ways. I think Stephen was probably more annoyed by the attention Hyaden gave the paps than he was obsessed or controlling over her. There isn't a pap she's not willing to pose for, which was proven when several gossips outed her for calling and setting up photo opportunities with the paps. Stephen always seemed pretty private about his personal life even while dating Hayden.
Stephen can do way better, hayden is a slut!
