Bubbly "The Hills" star Lauren Conrad is fuming at Us Weekly for embarrassing her on the cover this week.
Editors and writers at the celebrity magazine, who routinely dine, party and rub elbows with Conrad and her fellow reality show stars, pulled a bait-and-switch on the wide-eyed cutie when they pulled together a hodgepodge of interviews and put her on the cover under the blaring headline, "Stabbed in the Back," referring to her friend and co-star Audrina Patridge.
In fact, Conrad claims, she never said that to the weekly. Conrad writes on her MySpace page, "The article itself is a nice one but it follows headlines that, in no way, represent my words or feelings. I do not feel betrayed by Audrina or [Conrad's ex] Brody [Jenner]. I love them both and said nothing to contradict this."
One magazine insider told Page Six that Us Weekly didn't even have the "exclusive interview" it claimed to have with Conrad. "Us pulled quotes from various press trips where multiple reporters got quotes from Lauren," the source said.
"Us got what they wanted out of a few weeks of interviews, but they didn't let Lauren know what was going on," added our insider. "If you want to talk about who was stabbed in the back, it was Lauren. She was stabbed in the back by Us Weekly."
One friend of Conrad emphasized that she's upset because she had a particularly trusting relationship with her pals at the magazine. "She's very good friends with these people," a Conrad source told Page Six, referring to Us Weekly's reporters. "She goes out to dinner with them, and so does Audrina. So Lauren definitely wasn't happy when she saw this cover."
Sources pointed out the decision to put Conrad and her complaints on the cover was made by Editor-in-Chief Janice Min, not by the reporters.
Conrad - reluctant to ruin her relationship with the magazine, which often pays her to pose for photos - told us: "It was never my intention to criticize Us Weekly, as I have a great relationship with them. My statement was only meant to support and stand by my friends."
Us Weekly insists they did not pay Conrad for the photos and they had an exclusive with her.
