Thursday, August 07, 2008 || Lauren’s Choice: Giving Surfboard to 13-Year-Old Do-Gooder
The Hills star delivered her surfboard to Pat Pedraja, a 13-year-old Do Something Award nominee and leukemia patient.
“Pat since I think you are the real winner of the night I wanted to give you my surfboard,” Conrad wrote in an email. “Stay strong and let’s keep in touch. Love, Lauren.”
Pedraja was nominated for the prestigious $100,000 prize — announced this year during the Teen Choice Awards ceremony — for creating Driving for Donors, a program in which he and his mother drive cross-country in their “Donormobile” in search of bone marrow donors.
“I didn’t win the Do Something Award and was a little sad,” Pedraja posted on the organization’s Web site. “When Lauren won her award … she dedicated the award to ME and my work! That made me feel special! Lauren didn’t have to tell me that I was amazing, she didn’t have to go out of her way to give me a present and she didn’t have to dedicate her award to me, but SHE DID. Simple, kind and generous gestures like this make all the difference to me and I will never forget it!”
Conrad, who first met Pedraja during Do Something’s official Teen Choice pre-party, also gave him an iPod Touch filled with her favorite music. “She stayed up all night making the iPod playlist for him and then offered the surfboard to him privately when there were no cameras around,” an event rep tells PEOPLE.
For the 13-year-old, the message is simple: “We all look up to celebrities and I want to tell everyone that Lauren Conrad is an exceptional person, more than a reality TV star or fashion designer, but a person that I am proud to look up to,” he wrote on the blog. “I hope that one day I can make someone feel as good about themselves as Lauren Conrad made me feel. Shouldn’t we all want to make someone else feel great if we can. Come on celebrities, make someone’s day! It will make you feel good too!”
