Thursday, August 09, 2007 || Recap: The Hills Premiere
If you have ever wondered what it is like to cover a red carpet event for anything Hollywood related, let me tell you from the heart, wear comfortable shoes, check your recorder batteries and carry a big memory stick.
Corralled like sheep, I was thrust at the very end of the queue where the photographers had first crack and the online journalists had the tail end of the celebrities winding their way down the aisle, with a frantic publicist from a clothing manufacturer making the schmattes for Lauren Conrad's new clothing line, hectoring us to only ask one or two questions and stay off the Heidi/Spencer feud subject.
Heidi and Spencer came down the line first, like poster children for the master race; they spoke at length in hushed tones to each of us over the one subject everyone came to pick at like a Malibu tar ball stuck to your foot, “Can you tell us about the feud?”
The backstory in a nutshell, a day after Spencer Pratt spouted off to Lauren Conrad and her supporters via his website, his fiancée Heidi Montag added fuel to the fire in an interview with Philadelphia radio station Q102, all reported by Us Weekly.
When asked how much she hated Conrad, Montag, 20, answered, "A lot. I think it's really pathetic that she's so obsessed with my life and my relationship. I really think she needs to concentrate on something else, it's sad." She later added, "I never could be friends with a low-life like that."
Us Weekly writes that Pratt, 23, whose beef with Conrad was no secret, joined in on the LC-bashing session, offering a derisive "Ha ha" when the radio hosts made mention of her fashion line and calling the designs "stupid." All of this was rehashed in Los Angeles a few days ago on Ryan Seacrest's radio show.
Heidi came prepared, she knew they had flung it like monkeys on Seacrest’s show, her and Spencer’s schadenfreude aimed at Lauren Conrad, the star and epicenter of the entire “Hills” show.
The obvious outcome is the carrot of another possible reality show for Heidi, and an added leg up in publicity for her upcoming album where she raps. Really, she raps, and Spencer is a home boy too, digging “Holler at your boy” and telling me that pretty much occupies his entire iPod, Hip Hop.
Did I mention they were the blondest blondes I have ever seen, and I live in Southern California, the home of blonde-ass-blondes?
“This season is crazier than any other season,” said Heidi. Spencer followed up with “I’ve got no problem with anybody.” Someone in the line pushed harder for some venomous spew on LC, and the response from Spencer was, “Don’t even go there.” The two parroted their lines well, “We’re always in work mode,” saying Heidi, “And we are always together “24/7.” Smitten, Heidi added “I fell in love with him when I first met him.”
Another nugget Heidi dropped on the press line: “I’ve just been so busy with my music we don’t go out to clubs,” and “Friends should always be there for each other regardless.”
Her shoes were a Dita Von Teese height of “how can you walk in those” black pumps and her dress was a study in black and white and backless exposing every last vertebrae down to her sacrum. She was sporting “the ring” and the two are “in love” and she has a purple diamond the size of the Anaheim pond on her finger now to prove it.
Spencer wore his Gucci suit and told me he never wears any cologne, eschewing the stinkum for his own scent. He calls Heidi “Hides,” too.
The overwhelming scuttlebutt on the press line I overheard from the attending photographers and press alike was “do you think he is gay?” and “She’s twenty, she is ready to marry him?”
They came, took photos with some cell phones laid out for them to pick out, spoke to “LG’s” gracious host Mayleen Ramey, who had to wait the longest being the last stop on the red carpet bus, then the two golden children beat it fast before Audrina, LC and the gang showed up and the glitzy event devolved into a scene from ‘West Side Story” where both sides warring are the lily white Jets.
The action heated up as a girl named Elody came down the crimson path, informed by my awesome wingpeeps from the website, A Socialite’s Life, http://socialitelife.com Taleen and Wayne, whose witty company was the best part of the night, and who kindly supplied me with great photos taken by Wayne.
Elody is an ex Bolt House employee who is leaving August 29. She was rocking the feud-buster answers too: “I’m torn in between the two groups,” “I have a full-time job and the show is priority number 2,” and “The drama is real”, lamenting that it was “pretty sad friendships were broken,” with her final disclaimer of “You know, I’m not in the drama.” Orange county Audrina came and went, she was nice, in the shiniest dress I have ever seen, reminiscent of a metallic bike streamer which had Taleen musing we would be seeing her featured on the Go Fug Yourself website.
Audrina gushed, “I’m really excited and just grateful for the opportunity,” and she is making her own line of makeup with a partner named Steve, and wants to be an actress after “The Hills.” The token brunette told us her and Lauren’s favorite club haunts in LA were Le Deux, Lola’s Martini Bar and The Dime.
The star of the show, Lauren Conrad, was dressed classically in a black and tan sleeveless shirred tunic dress belted at the waist and her hair was simply styled to the side in a loose ponytail, and her makeup perfect. I asked her what she was wearing, and she replied,”Mark, I am their spokesperson and they send me boxes of it.”
Conrad has her eye on becoming a fashion mogul and is on her way with the Lauren Conrad Collection to be launched in major retail stores this fall, and is available online at www.shoplaurenconrad.com
She cited her influences as designers Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Furstenberg, and described her fashion line as southern California beach girl, that can morph from day to the nighttime with simple accessory switches.
When asked what look in fashion right now was not to her liking, LC had no love for the high waisted pants with the full leg. “It looks good on other people, but not for me.” She told me she plans to take her designing into the world of accessories down the road.
Jason Wahler came down the red carpet and turned up the volume. “They’re mentally retarded, that’s why they have no friends” said Jason of Heidi and Spencer. He was going to be great.
He spent a bit of time deflecting and playing down the “what’s with Bai Ling and you” questions that were over TMZ’s relentless street army of reporters who caught him dead to rights macking on the Ling at Crustacean in Beverly Hills.
Looking like a young Kevin Costner and Colin Farrell cross, with a scruffed beard and a face that looked like it had gently seasoned in rehab for a while (it had) he expressed his regrets for how he was living it up and abusing the hooch.
“I never liked Heidi from day one,” elaborated Jason, my favorite “Hills” member so far. He talked about how rehab had changed his life. A reporter from Star magazine asked him if he had any advice for Lindsay Lohan, which elicited a slight snort of a laugh and the response: “Stay plugged in to rehab, don’t leave.”
The entire time Jason was walking the press line, a circling Andy Milonakis was shouting at him to hurry up and other things I cannot print that rhyme with cluck and duck – which is pretty disconcerting when you look at Milonakis in person, and he seems like a kid still but in reality he is 31.
Andy Milonakis took some time out to chat, and he was relatively chill, but had some opinions about east coast-west coast usual suspect stuff, the shallowness of Los Angeles and the pretty people syndrome, and how he enjoys taking the piss out of them. Yet when he is here, he finds it “very relaxing” despite the general “douchey-ness” of Los Angeles and its crappy pizza that cannot hold a candle to New York.
Milonakis offered some sage advice, that when you switch from alcohol to weed, the overwhelming evidence of Hollywood being filled with douchebags and people with no soul is made much clearer.

Haha the press even thinks Spencer is gay. That's great. And Heidi can rap? Oh goodness that should be interesting.
I'm really starting to like Jason more and more now. Saying that he's always hated Heidi, really did it for me.
Did you get to talk to LO at all?
Did I read this right? Heidi is going to rap. LMAO.
Why does it appear that Andy Milonakis and Jason are attached at the hip lately? Such an odd combo...
Yep, she is going to rap. The album went from fergi to pop like britney and now urban w/ rapping. this might even eclipse kevin federline's.
^Hahaha... I agree. I'll take Kevin Federline rapping over Heidi any day! Her CD is gong to tank big time.
she is going to what? Rap. that must be a joke.
