I don’t normally watch MTV’s pseudo-reality dope opera The Hills (because I’m not much of masochist), but when I heard Gavin Beasley (a successful model and actor who just so happened to be a high school friend of mine) would be taking Lauren Conrad out on a date in this week’s episode, I simply had to tune in to this strange collision of my past and present. After seeing the show, and seeing Gavin (who’s really a cool, funny guy) manipulated to seem lame and boring to better fit the part of “dude who’s supposed to make Brody jealous”, I decided to look him up for his side of the story. During our candid session of “catch-up”, my school chum revealed several amusing anecdotes about his experience behind the scenes of The Hills, including some bombshells about his experiences with the producers that suggest - brace yourselves - the show might not be as representative of “reality” as we’ve been led to believe! There are a lot of Reality Show Victims in this country, and Gavin is one of them. This is his story:Alright, man. I’m just gonna come right out and ask: how the hell did you get involved with this televised Crazy Carnival?
Last year I was booked on an editorial modeling gig, posing with Lauren for this interview she did in People Magazine (ED NOTE: photo after the jump). We got along, and she kept trying to set me up with Heidi, because she was on a break from Spencer or something back then, and Lauren was trying to get her to move on. But nothing ever happened with that and Lauren was dating Jason (Wahler) at the time, so we didn’t keep in touch at all. Then in August I got a call from my agency to go to a casting call for Teen Vogue, and Lauren and the camera crews just so happened to be there. She remembered me from our shoot, and the next thing I know, a producer’s asking me to ask Lauren for her number, and I’m signing release forms and being shot for The Hills. They wanted me to ask her about the runway show, how long she had worked that day, when would she get off, stuff like that.
That’s insane. So was your whole experience on the show like that?
Absolutely, from the very beginning. Like, they totally set up the BBQ scene for Brody and I to meet each other and talk because, as they said, “the audience would get a kick out of seeing ‘the ex’ talking to ‘the new guy’.” So they rent this house in Malibu for a set, bought a bunch of food and drinks, and just filmed us hanging out. Brody would talk all this sh*t, then be like, “Sorry about that, we’re just trying to make good television.” Like at one point, some other dude walked up to us while we were talking, and Brody goes, “We’re trying to film a scene here. Do you mind?”, like he’s interrupting our lines. Haha, it was some of the best acting I’ve ever done.
Would you say Bro-Dog Jenner is a Cooler Dude in person, on TV, or just Totally Cool everywhere, all the time?
The interesting thing is Brody – off camera - was a pretty chill guy. When the show came out and he was saying stuff about me - like I was short, too perfect, boring, etc - I didn’t get pissed because I know that’s all solely done for The Hills. He creates drama and a storyline. That’s why he is there.
So the big date with Lauren. What did you two actually talk about for the hours and hours you spent together that we didn’t see on the show?
I honestly had a really hard time talking to her - she’s kind of a conversation killer, and when the cameras are rolling, all conversation is kept firmly on the surface. She talked about how mean Perez Hilton was, and how you have to be nice to the Paparazzi so they don’t release the uglier pictures of you. I don’t know – pop culture, Red Bull, stuff like that. In fact, the most interesting thing I got out of her was that she isn’t allowed to eat ice cream because her trainer told her she can’t.
That sounds like some riveting dinner discussion.
Ha, yeah. What you see is really what you get with these people. Lots of fascinating discussion about “the club”, Vegas, getting drunk, Heidi is evil, and so on. The lack of depth was actually uncomfortable for me. Like, how can nothing be everything you talk about? OH, I forgot – lots of talk about Lauren’s clothing line. That’s pretty important, right?
So let’s discuss about Nail-Polish-Gate. Some websites (I think mostly MySpace blogs written by teenagers who actually care about this stuff) are making a big scandal about the fact that Lauren was wearing red nail polish on your date, and when she got home and immediately (as we’re led to believe) called Bro-Dog, the nail polish was GONE, which suggest that The Hills MIGHT NOT REALLY BE REAL. Please, tell us this is not true.
Well here’s the thing. The show makes it seem like she got home from the date earlier, but in reality we hung out at The Grove for a couple hours after dinner (for some reason she took me to Barnes & Noble to show me this book they made about Season 1 of The Hills), then later went to the club Les Deux, and stayed out until about 2:30 or so. I don’t know what she did when I dropped her off, but if that’s “early night” for those two, they must have Insomnia.
What does Lauren smell like? My guess is Jolly Ranchers, Rose Petal body spray and medication?
She was odorless.
Dammit. So how did this big adventure finally end?
Well we shot all this back in August, and I didn’t film anything else, nor did I talk to Lauren again after our date night. Someone from MTV called two weeks later to see about me asking Lauren and Whitney out on a double date, but nothing happened with that. In fact, I actually feel like I had more of a relationship with my MTV contact than I ever did with Lauren.
Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
Well, this is sort of silly, but I ordered that Salmon Roll for myself and Lauren said she would like to try a piece, so of course MTV edited the scene to make it look like I’m force-feeding her the salmon that she hates, which I would never do on a date. Also, I guess people should just try to remember that this is all entertainment, and just as I’m not the boring dork they made me out to be, Lauren and the other people on the show are sometimes capable of being nice, decent, funny people. Except for Spencer, I hear he’s really like that.

i thought that when heidi and spencer were dating, jason and lauren were already broken up. doesn't make sense. because the first episode of the second season, you can see that jason and lauren were over. it wasn't till, like what, middle of the second season that lauren started to dislike spencer. so, it doesn't make sense at all. i'm thinking this wasn't a real interview and if it was, he was probably just pissed at the fact that lauren didn't connect with him.

I can understand his POV. As we all know, MTV can edit the hell out of anything. The show is about Lauren, and of course this date made him look boring and so on because, again, it's all about Lauren.
I would want to defend myself if I knew the real events were totally different from what is seen on TV. It's not fair to him, so I'm happy for him if what he says is true. It doesn't sound to me like he was going out of his way to be mean, he is just telling it like it is.
I'm kind of bummed, Gavin seemed so freakin cute and nice on the show. Now don't get me wrong, I believe some of what he said in the interview. But, I think he took it too far because he wan't happy with how he was portrayed. Some stuff he says just doesn't ring true. As others have mentioned Lauren wasn't dating Jason the first time she met Gavin so his timeline is off, also we saw with our own eyes Gavin be the first one to talk to Lauren. Again, I know they edit the show to death and some stuff is true and Lauren's not a saint etc etc but give the girl a break already! She's not going to discuss her deep thoughts with you or anyone about her family and work and life and love with cameras filming and everyone at home watching. She's been burned. She holds her cards more closely to her heart now. Doesn't mean she's not "real". It means she's just like you or me ....

Just b/c he didn't say that doesn't mean he's lying or he's bitter. Some of you talk like you personally know LC and her inside life. I like the Hills and LC, but I'm real about it and I know a lot of the scenes and outside characters are set up to create drama.
BUT one thing about this guy BUGS me...if he thinks he's above all this "shallowness" on the Hills, why did he even agree to be on it?? Oh that's right for his 15 min of fame...looks like he isn't much above anyone to say that they're too superficial

i just re-read the article and the part about Gavin being "a successful model and actor" jumped out at me. I had never heard of him, had any of you guys? Anyway,i went to imdb and guess what? They never heard of him either, there's no official web page for him either. Successful? Doesn't sound like it. He has a myspace page and has done a handful of commercial (theres a rumor he did the hillary duff come clean video but not sure) but most likely the Hills is THE biggest thing in his career. This interview just cemented his 15 minutes extending for a day or 2 more..

i don't think that she's a saint. i just think he's bitter. some of the things that he said doesn't make sense. i think lauren's been through a lot with boys, and just knows what she wants. she just didn't see it in him. i can tell that lauren isn't the most optimistic, outgoing, friendliest person you'll meet, i see how she acts on the show. but she probably has a good reason. she has long days, she has to juggle school and work, in which she doesn't even get paid. she gets followed around all the time, she has to work on her clothing line and she's a spokes model for mark. she's human just like me, i have my days where i'm just not in the mood to make friendly conversation, especially when i know it's not going to go anywhere. but i think he has a little bit of spencer instilled in him. lauren didn't do anything to him and he's going to be bitter about how he was portrayed? it's not lauren's fault, if he has a problem with it, then deal with the producers about it.

When Heidi broke up with Jordan, Jason and Lauren where still together for a couple of months ( in the summer ) and in the second season of the hills Heidi and Spencer where kinda dating. so its possible what i he is saying. Maybe Lauren would bring Gavin and Heidi together in that time.
I'm sure the show is fake, if it was all real it would be a really boring show just like laguna.

I believe Gavin although it's obvious he's a little bitter. LC doesn't strike me as the kind of girl who has deep conversations with anyone..unless they revolve fashion or us weekly. Gavin isn't the first person who has said she has no personality (KCavs called that out on season one of laguna). Still, Gavin went along with it because he wanted his 15 minutes and now he's trying to extend it to 17 minutes.
I didn’t think he was really that bitter - he was just trying to set the record straight. I don’t see why it’s so wrong to say that she was boring, when Lauren confirmed the same thing about him to Brody. And it doesn’t come as a shock to me that Lauren’s not particularly deep, so I have no reason to think he’s lying about that. Although I have to say that talking about her clothing line doesn’t seem like such a bad thing - obviously it’s going to be an important part of her life. Unless maybe she went on and on about it.
Also I don’t see how we know that Lauren wasn’t dating Jason at the time. It seemed to me that Spencer and Heidi had been dating on and off for a little while when they started filming season 2 which happened right after Lauren and Jason broke up. Of course, it’s impossible to tell the real timeline on this show, but that makes sense to me.
Anyway, I found the stuff about Brody pretty interesting. I don’t mind when they set up a BBQ or even when they have Heidi pretending to come home at the airport to save money on filming that scene. But it’s kind of annoys me when they set up fake dates (Gavin), fake jealousy (Brody), and fake relationships (Audrina/Justin-Bobby - even if it evolves into something real). Its obvious Gavin probably wouldn’t have asked Lauren out and who knows whether Brody would have been jealous even if it was real. And Audrina getting back together with JB because of producer meddling? I could see an actor going on a date since that’s not a big commitment, but the rest of this stuff? I just can’t believe these people just go along with it. Fame is a funny thing.

I dont think that Brody was jealous because he knows that this date was fake and it is just for plot. I am not sure what is the real story between Brody and LC but I dont think it is just for camera. At the VMAs, there were tons of reports that Brody was apparently jealous when Lauren made out w/ Cisco Adler (Yuck) and went to some after party with Josh Henderson. There was a period of time where Brody and LC were hanging out all the time (w/ Frankie too). So, I think that they were probably hooking up until the VMAS when LC I guess decided to go for lesser...
I know most of you do not like Brody but I think he is better for her than Cisco Adler or Josh Henderson (at lest BJ has not slept with Paris Hilton).

when lauren started to dislike spencer, she and jason have been over for months. lauren liked spencer at the beginning of the season, it wasn't till middle of the season, that she hated him, and during that time, it was "jason who?". when she tried to hook heidi and gavin up, it was after spencer fooled around with those fake playmates. and i have a friend who goes to fidm and she has a class with lauren, they filmed there but it was never shown on tv. she's a part time student. lauren doesn't seem to be the type to have deep conversations with people, but seriously, this was their first date. did he expect her to have deep intellectual conversations with her? you can tell she lost interest in him while they were still on the date. most of the things this guy "gavin" said doesn't seem to match up.

I'm sure there's a lot of truth to what gavin says here... personally, I'm not surprised at all that the hills is mostly fake. I mean, you can tell heidi and spencer are acting about 90% of the time. and none of us should be surprised to learn that lauren's an intellectual lightweight... I mean, there's no way she could tolerate heidi and audrina otherwise.
that being said, there are three sides to every story, and given that the person interviewing this (ahem) "successful model and actor" is one of his friends, his account certainly isn't unbiased either.

If you guys check out old photographs of Brody and Kristin you will see Heidi and Spencer were together at that time. This has all been a spoof. Heidi brought spencer and Brody into the group after Kristin and Brody broke up. If you think any of this is "real" than I guess some of you still believe in Santa Claus
Speaking for myself I don't care if it's real. It's an entertaining show that I enjoy watching. If Lauren and Brody are into eachother for real- good for them. If they're not, keep acting. I like watching them interact. For the record I think Speidi is a real couple. I just think they fake their fights and stuff...but again I don't much care.

i worked on the reality show called "One Ocean View" on ABC as a production Assistant. it was cancelled after the 1st episode. Realty shows are not scipted but they create scenarios for the cast. They do rent houses that doesn't belong to the cast. The only thing that's real is the conversation they come up with that the producers tell them to bring up.....i think lauren holds back for the camera.. just thought i share.
I worked on reality show "one ocean View". Another thing. The hills is taped for 6 months or so and they don't use alot of the footage. U technically dont know when Heidi met Spencer. U guys keep matching "real life" time with "reality time". we don't know when Lauren really broke off w/ Jason. we can't go according to "reality time. we have to go according to "Real life" time. whatever that is.....

I think it's sad that guys have to be prodded by the producers to pretend to be interested in her (brody and gavin). I feel sorry for Lauren that this came out because it makes her sound so pitiful.

I'm actually inclined to believe everything he's saying. His descriptions of the show, Lauren, etc. just reinforce opinions I've already had about them all (except Brody, I honestly didn't expect him to be described as a chill guy). But yeah, none of us really know the truth. We all just have our own opinions about what everyone and the show is like.
None of us really know if Lauren is that nice and sweet or if she really is that vapid and boring.

None of these kids from LB are particularly deep (except trey), and that's not why we love to watch the show. It's just interesting to see the fabulous lives they get to experience at such a young age. This "model" is doing what everyone else does when on a reality show...trying to extend his 15 minutes into 20 minutes. So he needs to talk crap to actually be interesting!
