It’s 8 a.m., but one of Hollywood’s favourite daughters is already up, ready to dish about backstabbing-former-friends and their less-than-stellar boy toys.

By the end of the day, huge crowds of teenagers will flock to Canada’s MTV hub in Toronto in the hopes of glimpsing the network’s reality show queen as she puts in an appearance to promote the end of season two of her hit show The Hills.

“It was absolute madness,” wrote one publicist from MTV Canada.

Canadian Tire, located across the street, supposedly sells out of lawn chairs in honour of the event, while the hot dog vendor has its entire supply decimated.

Before that happens, Lauren Conrad phones during a publicity stop in Toronto to talk about her falling-out with former best pal Heidi Montag (over Heidi’s boyfriend Spencer…who Lauren seems to loathe), having her pal Audrina Patridge take over as her roommate from Heidi and much, much more.

The Hills follows the exploit of the blond fashionista and her equally lovely friends as they work, intern, make-up, break-up, eat tons of sushi and hit the clubs in Los Angeles.

The series is a spin-off of MTV’s wildly popular Laguna Beach (the latest season of which starred Lauren’s little sis).

Fans can’t get enough of The Hills, or the lovely ladies who’ve made it a hit. So we felt honoured she was willing to give us a ring to chat about the show that’s made her capable of creating Hills-mania on the streets of Toronto.

Lauren Q & A

What’s up for Season 3?

“We start filming in about two weeks so I have no idea! We can never really know until we start filming. It’ll be fun to have a new roommate, I mean this last season I had a roommate who basically didn’t live with me. But me and Audrina always have fun so it’ll be interesting to have us living together.”

What’s going on between you and Heidi now?

“You never really know what will happen in the future but as of now we don’t really speak. We’re both professional, this is our job. We’re not going to go around saying horrible things about each other. “

What made you decide to sign up for a third season of The Hills?

“When they asked me to do season two, I was really reluctant to do it. But this last season I had so much fun filming that I was actually excited to do a third one.”

What was fun about filming season two?

“It’s a lot easier to film when you’re single. You can be the best girlfriend in the world, but you’re not going to be perfect all the time. I remember episodes would come out and I’d be dreading what I’d said when my boyfriend wasn’t around. But this season, when I’m single, I’ve said things about guys but I’d go on one date with them and wouldn’t talk to them anymore so it doesn’t matter.”

Is it hard to date when you’re on a reality show? How do you know when a guy is really into you or being on TV?

“You don’t. That’s what me and Audrina deal with. It’s really, really hard to date, as if it’s not hard enough to date in L.A. as it is. But the problem is, it’s really hard to decide if the guy wants to just be on TV or if he really likes you. And if he really likes you and is a cool guy, he normally doesn’t want to be on TV which is also a problem. So it’s very difficult to date. So I am single right now.”

What are your feelings on [Heidi’s boyfriend] Spencer now?

“I think my feelings are pretty obvious so I don’t think I even really need to talk about them.”

When you’ve got a friend and you don’t care for their boyfriend, what do you think is the best approach to take?

“I tried to take the best approach I could. I’ve been in the same situation only on the other side. I tried to act in a way that I wish my friends had. I needed to voice my opinion and say ‘This is how I feel, if you wanna date them that’s fine, but I just want you to know I’m not going to pretend to like them. I’m going to be here for you when things go wrong, but I just want you to know that I really think you’re making a mistake.’ I think that’s all you can do – just be honest with them and still be supportive of them at the same time.”

Do you ever watch an episode and then wonder what your parents are going to say?

“No. I talk to my mom two and three times a day anyway and so she’s already heard all the stories, so my parents are never really shocked by anything I do. I don’t think I’m that crazy though. I’m pretty tame.”

Are you happy with the way you come across on the show?

“Yeah, there’s obviously things I would change. I think it’s almost good to be able to watch myself on TV because it helps me notice things about myself that I do want to change. After watching the first season…I almost looked depressed. One thing I tried to change about myself is that I needed to be happier, a little more upbeat. Try to complain less, be a more positive person.”


Do you talk to Stephen (Lauren’s former flame from her days on the first two seasons of Laguna Beach)?

“I see him out every once and a while. We’re still friends, but he’s really busy. He’s on One Tree Hill now, he’s always traveling around.”

Are there any people who’ve come back into your life from Laguna Beach who might be in season 3?

My best friend in high school Lo and I grew apart because she went to school far away but she just moved to L.A. So I believe she’ll be filming a little more in the third season.

Did you give advice to your sister about Laguna Beach?

“She grew up with cameras in our house for a couple years, so she was pretty used to the idea. I didn’t really need to give her advice other than ‘Just don’t let cameras change your behaviour, just be yourself. Don’t go on the internet, don’t read what people are writing about you, as long as you have family and friends, that’s all that matters.’”

What’s your career goal?

“I’m starting my own fashion line. This whole past week I’ve literally been cooped up in a studio designing. We’re working really hard to get it out as soon as possible. I’ve been working on my clothing line and I’m also working on a purse line. It’s things I would wear.”

How often do you go shopping in the week?

“I usually shop five days out of the week.”
