Monday, March 24, 2008 || Heidi Declared 'Feminist Hero' by NY Times
This is why so many people mocked the New York Times when they decided to really unleash their celebrity coverage on their readers and across the World Wide Web. The Old Gray Lady has dubbed MTV's "The Hills" star Heidi Montag a "feminist hero." Wait - what? Who knew that breast implants and plastic surgery had hit the feminist movement.
Conrad, who told the reporters last week, "I'm sure a lot of people don't take me seriously" is slammed in the article by the Times television critic Bellafante for her neediness and Heidi is praised for her independence. If it wasn't the New York Times I would think that the whole review was satire.
Here's a tip to the paper. This is a reality TV show of what many believe are really bad self-indulgent actresses. If any of these women are looked up to by young girls as feminist icons it is all over for feminism.
I can see their point actually. I mean, of all the female choices out there Heidi would definitely not be my first choice. But in comparison to Lauren, Heidi definitely demands more self-respect (well, her own weird version of self-respect. But she demands it nonetheless).
It is very disappointing watching Lauren pine after/throw herself to all these guys that obviously don't want anything more from her than fame (Brody), to make someone jealous (Stephen), or sex.
i don't know whether to laugh or cry. this author has either never followed the hills or maybe spencer is writing a column for the NY times as well. there are no feminist heroes in hills. it's a reality show for heaven sakes.
9:09-well, we don't necessarily know how true that is. We've all said many times on this blog that they make things up left and right to get publicity.
Heidi is obviously very physically insecure, but when push comes to shove, she won't take the crap and will stand up for herself when she feels she should.
Not putting up with guys BS doesnt make you a 'feminist hero'and both these girls have left guys because of a sucky relationship and both have gone right back to that guy.
I thought the writers strike affected tv but apparently it affects the newspaper, because for NY times to comment and say something so stupid is beyond rediculous in my eyes.
hahaha, has anyone else noticed that people will throw in this "edited" excuse whenever it's convenient (to save face for Lauren)?
I mean, I'm not arguing, the show is highly edited and I don't believe 90% of the situations. But some people will wax on and on about how hard-working Lauren is going to school and interning, being "chosen" to go to Paris, how much Brody likes her, etc. but the minute someone points out something negative about her based on the show it's "all edited".
Cmon people, you can't defensively argue that the show is highly edited yet give her credit for all the things you see happening on there too.
