Whitney Port never wanted to be famous. But one day, she took an internship with Teen Vogue in Los Angeles and found herself at the heart of MTV's most popular show: "The Hills."
If you've never watched the show, "The Hills" is a reality series that follows four young women involved in the fashion and music industries in Los Angeles. On the show, Port and Lauren Conrad (Conrad is from MTV's "Laguna Beach") become fast friends working at Teen Vogue. They share experiences with other L.A. scenesters like Audrina Patridge and Heidi Montag.
Call it a voyeuristic time-out. Call it a guilty pleasure. We call it just plain fun. The latest episodes of "The Hills" were filmed in Paris and begin airing Monday. We caught up with Port just a few days after her 23rd birthday to talk about what it's like to be followed around by the cameras every day.
How did you first get involved with "The Hills"? I was working in the same building as Teen Vogue at Women's Wear Daily, doing an internship, and I heard that Teen Vogue was looking for interns. And since I was going to school in L.A., I thought it would be fun to have a little side job. So I walked upstairs and interviewed with Teen Vogue, and that's when they told me MTV was doing a show with them. So it all kind of happened by coincidence.
So how has your life changed since the show started? For the most part, because I keep so much of my personal life private, it hasn't changed so much, other than the fact that when I step outside the door, I have to be aware of my actions because people are watching. There are always people recording every step you make, so I just have to lead an honest, moral life, which I would do anyway, no matter what. But it just makes me more aware of it.
"The Hills" is the highest-rated show on MTV. Why do you think the series is so popular? I think people are kind of enthralled with the Los Angeles culture and lifestyle. And I think it's especially [true of] the young adult culture. I just think that people want to escape, and it's a form of escapism. Because when I watch reality shows, it's just fun to sit on the couch and not think about your own life.
What should we expect from these upcoming episodes of "The Hills" in Paris? I don't even know! We filmed so much, and Lauren and I were constantly working, so there are so many things to choose from. But I'm really excited to watch because the fashion and scenery in Paris are so amazing. I think it's going to be a really fun look inside Vogue.
So are you always surprised when you watch episodes of "The Hills," because you don't know how the editing is going to construe things? We're always surprised. But for the most part, we're there, so we know exactly what has happened and what hasn't happened. You can get a little frustrated if you did a good job on one thing and a not-so-good job on another, and then they highlight the not-so-good. But you know they have to show reality, so I understand that.
What is it like having the camera crew with you all the time? It must be crazy! At first it was a little uncomfortable, because you're not used to having cameras in your face and having to watch every word you say. But now we're really used to it, and the camera crew has become, like, best friends of mine, so we're comfortable and able to be exactly who we are.
Is it hard to go on dates with the cameras rolling? Yes, I've only done it once, and it was so uncomfortable. [She laughs.] I was so nervous for it, so I think that might be my first and last time. . . . First dates are already awkward enough, and then when you have cameras watching, it just makes it 10 times more uncomfortable.
Your hair and makeup always look perfect on the show. Do you do that all yourselves? Thanks! Yeah, there are no hair or makeup people on the show, so we do it all ourselves, and we just have to come camera-ready.
Are there any misconceptions about the show you'd like to put to rest? Just the [notion] that it's fake and false. . . . The drama is real, and our jobs are real and our relationships are all real.
I hardly think it's a big coincidence she ended up on The Hills. She was college roomates with Christina from Season One of Laguna Beach. A little too much of a coincidence imo.
Aw, I like Whitney. She seems really nice and down to earth. But yeah, the jobs are pretty fake. I mean, I'm sure she did something productive (and maybe that's what she means), but the jobs are clearly functioning for the show.
